How To Tell When It’s Time To Get a New Mattress
How To Tell When It’s Time To Get a New Mattress

The signs are all there—it’s time for a new mattress. You’re waking up repeatedly in the middle of the night, unable to get comfortable, or in the morning feeling stiff and filled with aches and pains. If you’re still not sure it’s time to update your bunk, berth, or bed, here’s how to tell when it’s time to get a new mattress.

Enough Time Has Passed

Being frugal and making the greatest and longest use of major purchases is admirable, but mattresses do have a shelf life of 7 to 10 years. Sleep may seem like a time of passive rest, but it’s anything but. For seven or so years, you’ve been resting, tossing, and turning in your bed for eight hours a night. Add to that all the times you sat or laid down to read in it, let your dog or cat romp on it, and used it as a place to work or watch TV, among other activities. You put your mattress through the paces more than you think!

Your Mattress Is Saggy and Baggy

The next indication is the most obvious: your mattress looks like it’s been through a war and lost. If it sags, bags, otherwise looks deformed, it’s losing its shape and its ability to comfortably house your sleeping body. A spent mattress’s springs may also start to poke through, and the fabric will look tatty and even torn. Stains, of course, are real turnoffs as well—and sorry, but you can only flip the mattress so many times before it just can’t hack it anymore.

Your Mattress Is Squeaky and Creaky

Your mattress may be loudly telling you it’s time to go through ear-offending creaks, squeaks, and other unpleasant noises. Weak springs make an audible fuss as the weakened metal groans beneath your weight. It might be your box spring, which can also break down, so check to see how it’s holding up as well. But listen closely and see (or rather hear) if your mattress is to blame.

Your Body Language

Here’s one more way how to tell when it’s time to get a new mattress: what does your body say? Are you repeatedly waking up in the middle of the night in pain or discomfort? Do you feel stabbing pains in different parts of your body where the springs might be poking through? Is it hard to get comfy; does the bed feel too warm; or do you feel itchy and achy? Your body and the mattress have reached an agreement that it’s time for an upgrade!
