Tips for Building a Guest Bedroom in a Basement

Tips for Building a Guest Bedroom in a Basement

Basements are one of the most underused rooms in your house, but you can give it a new life while increasing your home’s value. How? By converting part of it into a bedroom. It might not even require that much gutting and rehabbing. To help you get started, here are a few helpful tips for building a guest bedroom in a basement. You’ll need more than just a mattress and bed, though!

Clean It Up and Keep It Dry

Before making any major changes, clean up the basement as thoroughly as possible. Get rid of dust, grime, and spiderwebs. Work from the ceiling to the floor, vacuuming out the nooks and crannies. Wipe down and dust all surfaces with a fresh-smelling, disinfecting household cleaner. Clean out the window wells and clear the windows to let as much sunlight in as possible. If water comes into the basement, fix that problem. Install a dehumidifier to remove any moisture that can lead to mold, mildew, or unpleasant odors.

Add Some Drywall

An unfinished basement doesn’t make a great bedroom, but with a little polish, it can be turned into a pleasant personal space. If you want to add charm and a homier look, add drywall to the wall studs and ceiling beams, or do a thorough paint job on the concrete walls, joists, and any exposed pipes. Concrete walls will make the basement bedroom a bit chillier, so consider adding insulation. If you want it to have a private, closed-off feeling, set up an ersatz wall to separate it from the rest of the basement. You could use hanging curtains or bookshelves.

Light It Up

When you’re considering tips for building a guest bedroom in a basement, banish the darkness by putting up some proper lighting. Get some lights that’ll spread their light evenly throughout the space. Floor lamps are best placed in different corners. Keep a table lamp within easy reach of the bed in case guests need some illumination at night.

Make It Cozy

A basement bedroom requires extra elements to make it feel as warm and inviting as the rest of the house. Add a comfortable bed with a Tempur-Pedic mattress (available at our store in Houston, TX), a convenient nightstand and bureau, and a desk and chair. Remove the chill of a concrete floor with an area rug.
