Color Trends: Choose the Right Colors for Your Home Furniture

Color Trends: Choose the Right Colors for Your Home Furniture

Picking out the right color for your furniture isn’t a black and white matter (unless you prefer to keep things spare and monochromatic, of course). When choosing the proper colors, you need to keep several factors in mind, including your own personal sense of style. Here’s our two cents on color trends and how to choose the right colors for your home furniture.

Pick the Color of the Dominant Piece

Let’s begin by defining the term color trend. A color trend can be a fad or popular color or set of colors that reflect current fashions or popular hues (think of the bright colors of the ’80s or the earthy tones of the ’70s). But a color trend can also be a personal choice. Pick your color scheme by considering the tint and hues that most appeal to you. For example, if the color of the cushions on a couch, the woody finish of a coffee table, or a particularly colorful area rug appeal to you, make that your starting point. Pick accompanying furniture, décor, and other elements that reflect or echo the central piece’s color. Look deeply into the piece’s color scheme, and you’ll see there’s more than one color at play there.

What’s Your Personal Palette?

When exploring color trends and deciding how to choose the right colors for your home furniture, don’t look too far. Some experts recommend checking your wardrobe for compatible colors. Whatever color you look good in will look even better on furniture of similar shades. Look good in black, white, brown, or even orange? Similarly colored furniture will completely complement you and your lifestyle.

Rise Up

Many decorators recommend starting from the bottom and rising from darks to lights. Darker rugs can set the tone, but even a bright rug can set the tone for a room that grows brighter the higher one rises. Wood furniture permits a second palette of subtle browns, creams, and other hues accented by slightly brighter fabric cushions. Lighter wall decorations and accents continue the trend on the walls, culminating in the light of the lamps, fixtures, and other lighting elements. Keep the transition gradual, and you’ll find the perfect palette for the room.

Think in Tones

Are you flummoxed by color combos? Stick to a color you like, but branch out into different tones. Green lends itself to so much variety, from dark and rich forest greens to frothy mints and tea greens that recall the sea. Blue is another one, recalling the sky, island waters, and other calming elements. Keep it simple and add individual pieces slowly. Once you find the proper color, you’ll begin to see and feel what resonates best in your home.
